The City of Port Colborne Ontario was settled in the early 1800’s, with the first recorded settler, Robert Richardson arriving in 1802. Permanent settlement started along with construction of the Welland Canal in 1832.

The Port Colborne area was first known as Gravelly Bay but was later named after Lt. Gov. Sir John Colborne, governor of Canada, by Hon. William Hamilton Merritt.
